Alternate nostril breathing, or Nadi Shodhana, is a yogic technique where you breathe through one nostril at a time, gently closing the other with your fingers. Switching sides with each breath is calming and centring, and brings a sense of balance.

When to use it

Use it to centre yourself before meditation or focused work, or any time you feel scattered and want to feel balanced.

Benefits

  • Calms and centres the mind
  • Brings a sense of balance
  • Supports focus and clarity
  • A grounding pre-meditation practice

How to do it

  1. 1Use your thumb to close your right nostril, breathe in through the left
  2. 2Close the left nostril and breathe out through the right
  3. 3Breathe in through the right nostril
  4. 4Close it and breathe out through the left, then keep alternating
